What is hip-hop? Hip-Hop began as a subculture initially comprised of primarily inner-city youth whose amusements included rapping, DJ'ing, graffiti art, and break dancing. These terms became known as the four basic elements of hip-hop and spawned into a vast culture of its own. Hip-Hop is now often referred to as an art form that is prevalent within our entire culture and includes all aspects of urban underground and commercial music as well as fashion, arts, and entertainment. Hip-Hop is not just a fad of yesterday; it is a phenomenon of today and tomorrow. Hip-Hop is a lifestyle ... SO LIVE IT! by Kevin B. Maddox

About UsWhat is Culture Shock®?
In a world where style and music are constantly changing, Culture Shock choreography remains innovative and unique, resulting in a troupe of individuals who express hip-hop in a style all their own. Culture Shock dancers take their passion one step further by sharing their talents in the surrounding communities. Culture Shock's ongoing commitment to community involvement is exemplified by its youth outreach programs. These programs are designed to offer young people a positive alternative to some of the destructive influences plaguing today's youth. Participants benefit from mentoring and structured dance training which lead to opportunities to exhibit and showcase their talents to the community, friends, family, and peers. A Worldwide OrganizationThe “hip-hop culture” has permeated popular culture in an unprecedented fashion. Because of its enormous cross-over appeal, this culture is a potentially great unifier of diverse populations. Although created by black youth on the streets, hip-hop's influence has become worldwide. It has served as a catalyst for unifying individuals (particularly youth) across a rich and diverse ethnic spectrum. Reaching far beyond the confinements of the US, Culture Shock has expanded into an international network of professional dancers who share the same passion for performing and community outreach through the art of music and dance. Just as the hip-hop culture has become a phenomenon that has spread from continent to continent, Culture Shock has followed a similar pattern. Culture Shock is a worldwide organization encompassing seven national troupes (including San Diego, Los Angeles, Oakland, Las Vegas, Chicago, Atlanta, and Washington, DC) and two international troupes (including Canada and the United Kingdom). Each troupe shares the same mission, vision, and values! Sharing The VisionThe hip-hop dance culture began over 25 years ago as a positive outlet for youthful energy and creativity, and perhaps most importantly, it was an alternative to drugs and violence. Culture Shock believes in continuing the positive tradition of the hip-hop dance culture by increasing awareness of its history and combining it with today's current expressions of hip-hop dance. Culture Shock also utilizes hip-hop as a powerful medium to inspire performance and to bring positive messages to diverse communities.
